Procedures:

Focus: Introduction to Novels

Day 1: Monday, April 5, 201X

A few days prior: Students selected their top five choices for the Joseph Bruchac books. The teacher grouped the students based on ability level and book choices. The students also have collaborated to create expectations for working in their groups. They discussed and decided on what guided reading groups should look like and sound like.

6) Attention-Getter: (15 min)

  • The teacher will introduce the packet and short biography about Joseph Bruchac.
  • He or she will have the students fill out the Know and Want to Know sheet in the packet. The students will share what they are hoping to learn from the author study.
  • The teacher will explain the literature circles, the packets, and the rubric. He or she also will explain that the students need to give the letter to their parents and get their parent's signature. The packet will stay in the homework folder.
  • The teacher will assign books and explain the number inside. He or she will explain how to treat the books and packets with care. Explain the books may be challenging, but do not get frustrated, we will take it one step at a time. Do not read ahead. It is not fun to discuss a book with someone if they have already read something.
  • He or she will put students in their groups and explain that they need to figure out how many pages to read everyday. The students will have 10 days (or two weeks) to finish their book.

7) Activities; model → guided practice → independent practice:

A. Model (15 min)

  • The teacher will model how the chart will work. Each group will rotate one spot on the chart everyday. When guided reading time starts, they will follow the directions for that day.
  • The teacher will explain the different pages in the packet. Say that they are not to work ahead, because the teachers might have special directions when they meet in guided reading groups. They also need to be in complete sentences.
  • Students will look to Spelling Activities, and pick one. They will turn it in when they are finished.
  • Students will listen for the timer to know when to rotate to the next section.

B. Guided Practice (30min)

  • Students will bring post-its with them.
  • Students will move throughout stations.
  • Some students will meet with the teacher to discuss "My questions", "Character Sketch", or "Self Talk" strategies.
  • Some students will work with a partner on "Context Clues"
  • Some students will read quietly with their group.

C. Individual (30 min)

  • Some students will read independently, or work on skills such as "Writing Prompt", Spelling activities, "Predict-a-Plot" and "Visualizing poetry."
